Project Background

In Kenya, many young people have no profession, and the country’s youth unemployment rate of 17.3% is the highest in East Africa. On the other hand, there is often a lack of well-trained specialists on the ground. This dilemma is based on the problem that only a few young people attend university after finishing secondary school and many who are suitable for training do not start an apprenticeship because there is a lack of vocational schools, especially in rural areas. For the young people in the rural region of Kitui, 180 km from Nairobi, the nearest training centres are far away in the large cities. In addition to the school fees, the distance leads to further financial burdens for accommodation and travel, which the majority of the parents cannot afford.

Our Impact

The newly built and equipped vocational school in Kitui focuses on skilled trades such as metalwork, welding, electronics, auto mechanics, IT and renewable energies. The young people are trained in the various trades according to national and international standards. The vocational school also places great emphasis on a combination of theory and practice. An important part of the training workshop is the production workshop, which makes it possible for the school to earn its own income from the sale of produced goods or to generate repair orders that can be carried out by the trainees.

Thanks to the high-quality training, new opportunities are opened to the young people. The graduates can find employment or even start a small business themselves. This will enable them to finance themselves and their families. The long-term goal of the project is for successful graduates to hire other young adults in their companies.
