Ocean Kind Education Center, Zanzibar
To address the growing waste problem in Zanzibar in a sustainable way, the project combines environmental education, recycling, and social development. It creates new opportunities for young people and strengthens the local community by linking environmental responsibility with educational and income-generating opportunities.
Project Info
In Zanzibar, the amount of waste is growing rapidly, while there is a lack of effective systems for waste separation, recycling, and disposal. The consequences include environmental pollution, health risks, and a lack of future prospects, especially for young people without access to education or employment.
This is exactly where the “Ocean Kind Education Center” project comes in. The focus is on establishing an eco-friendly education center as a place for learning and community engagement. Through workshops, school partnerships, and hands-on activities, children, youth, and families are educated about issues such as plastic pollution, resource conservation, and the circular economy.
The project goes beyond mere knowledge transfer. Training in recycling, upcycling, and green entrepreneurship equips young people in particular with practical skills and strengthens their prospects in the job market. In addition, a local collection and recycling system is being established. A so-called SwopShop creates additional incentives: collected plastic waste can be exchanged there for everyday goods.
The project takes a holistic approach: environmental problems are not only brought to light but transformed into concrete opportunities for local residents. Through the close involvement of the local community, a sustainable long-term model is emerging that combines ecological responsibility with economic prospects and social participation.
As a pilot project, this approach is set to be implemented in other regions of Tanzania in the future, thereby generating a lasting impact beyond Zanzibar.
