Seeds of Future, Douro region
The project supports children and young people in structurally disadvantaged rural communities of Portugal’s Douro region, where poverty, outmigration and limited educational opportunities shape everyday life for many families. Through continuous academic support, psychosocial guidance, and targeted career orientation, the project empowers young people to successfully navigate their educational pathways and develop their own future.
The project
In the Douro region, many families face economic insecurity and social isolation. Extracurricular learning opportunities are scarce, and access to cultural and professional orientation is limited. As a result, children and young people from less academically supported households often lack the guidance and stability needed to stay on track in school.
Seeds of Future provides long-term support for young people aged six to 25 – from primary school through entering the workforce. In local learning and cultural centers, participants receive individualized tutoring, psychosocial support, and access to programs in music, arts, sports and entrepreneurship. Initiatives such as “Mind’Ouro” strengthen emotional resilience, while “Take Action” promotes career exploration, internships and entrepreneurial thinking.
Families are actively involved through home visits and counseling, helping to anchor education sustainably within the family environment. Practical assistance, including learning materials, digital equipment and transportation support – ensures consistent participation.
The result is a long-term intervention model that reduces educational inequality, supports young people in their transition to vocational training and employment, and contributes to the sustainable development of the region.
