Artificial coral reef installed in the Maldives

10. June 2026

Just in time for World Ocean Day, we have some exciting news from our Reefs Renew project in the Maldives: In May, a new artificial coral reef was successfully installed at the Anantara Dhigu Maldives Resort.

The approximately 150squaremeter reef consists of innovative clay modules manufactured using 3D printing technology, which were anchored in the sea by our project partner rrreefs. The goal is to regenerate damaged coral reefs, create new habitats for marine organisms, and raise awareness about the protection of marine ecosystems.

The first signs of success were evident shortly after installation: as early as the second day, the project team observed the first fish exploring the new structures. In the coming months, the modules will be continuously colonized by corals and other marine organisms, gradually developing into a living reef.

The Reefs Renew project combines innovative conservation solutions with sustainable tourism and demonstrates how different partners can work together to contribute to the protection of the oceans. Together with Edelweiss, help alliance supports the implementation of the project and helps to strengthen the resilience of sensitive marine ecosystems in the long term.
