Read to Succeed, Monrovia

Monrovia - Liberia

We are improving the literacy rate in Liberia, a country where only 48% of the population can read after many years of civil war. Our initiative focuses on providing children and young adults with essential reading skills. By providing them with a self-directed and fun learning experience and a positive environment, we empower them to succeed in their education and beyond.

Project background

Together with our partner organization, we are actively working to promote the literacy rate in Liberia. After many years of civil war, the country’s literacy rate currently stands at 48%, which poses a number of challenges.

Children who lack basic reading and writing skills have significant learning difficulties that can persist into adulthood and hinder their personal and professional development. In addition, there are a significant number of parents in Liberia who are illiterate or have limited literacy skills due to the effects of the war.

As a result, it is up to schools and educational programs to teach children the basic skills of reading and writing.

Our project focuses on teaching these skills to children and young adults between the ages of 5 and 16, regardless of their literacy level. Our goal is to empower both illiterate and semi-literate children so that they have the tools they need to succeed in their education and beyond.

I come from a family where neither of my grandparents could read or write. For this reason, although they were very intelligent, they were unable to realize their full potential in life. Unfortunately, this situation still exists 60 years later. My country Liberia has a literacy rate of about 48 percent. More than half of us can neither read nor write.

The Rosetta Steps “Read to Succeed after School Program” teaches students the skills that will make them readers and lifelong learners.

I am passionate about education because I have seen first-hand how much it can change my life.

Rosetta Steps Educational Center is located in a very poor neighbourhood in Monrovia. I admire the project since, compared to other projects, it’s very well managed.
Qualitative education is not an evidence in Liberia but the teachers at Rosetta know how to teach. All children come to the school with a smile and you just feel this is a very inspiring place.

Project Target

We believe that every child has the potential to become a confident reader.

Each child begins with a brief assessment of phonics, oral reading and reading comprehension to determine the most appropriate group for them.

Once in their group, the program focuses on self-directed learning using engaging audio and visuals to make learning fun and interactive. The focus is on basic phonics skills, vocabulary development and sight word recognition, which are crucial for reading fluency and comprehension.

Our project also aims to boost participants’ self-confidence and self-esteem by creating a positive learning environment that encourages them and tracks their progress. This newfound confidence can have a significant impact on their overall reading success. The dedicated campus available for the project provides a safe space for students and fosters a love of reading. The graduates of our project have shown remarkable improvements in their academic performance, including in subjects such as math.

We know how important it is to involve families, schools, communities and religious institutions in promoting literacy. Teachers and parents are invited to participate in the project free of charge so that they have the opportunity to experience and learn effective teaching methods.

Our program goes beyond improving reading skills. We also provide the children with a nutritious hot meal to improve their concentration and academic performance. We also contribute to the local economy by creating employment opportunities for teachers in the community.
