Bridges to Independence, Hamburg
The project provides vital relief for families with children who have severe multiple disabilities through reliable short-term care. By creating a dedicated space for young adults, the project now offers support beyond the age of 18 – bringing stability, security and renewed perspective during a crucial life transition.
The project
“Der Neue Kupferhof” is unique in Germany. For many years, the facility has supported families through temporary care stays for children with severe multiple disabilities. Until now, this support ended when young people turned 18 – even though their need for care and assistance often remains unchanged. For many families, this marks a painful gap in support.
The project closes this gap by adding an additional floor to the existing building, including four to six accessible rooms, shared living areas and specially equipped care and therapy rooms. At the same time, a dedicated 18+ concept is being developed to address the specific medical, social and developmental needs of young adults.
The focus lies on self-determination, daily living skills and social participation. Structured day programs, guidance during transition phases and partnerships with sheltered workshops and inclusive employment initiatives open up – wherever possible – pathways toward work and greater independence.
In this way, a sustainable model is created that provides families with reassurance and offers young adults with complex disabilities meaningful opportunities for growth and participation.
