Project background

A large number of children in the Arusha region, in northeastern Tanzania, live in poor and difficult conditions. Street children and orphans are among the most vulnerable groups, as their lack of protection often exposes them to life-threatening situations.

In the Rays of Love preschool, street children and orphans, as well as children from socially disadvantaged families, receive a comprehensive school education that is adapted to their needs and prepares them well for elementary school. The children receive general knowledge and values in various areas such as hygiene, health, children’s rights and friendship. Even after the children leave the preschool and transfer to the state elementary school, project staff regularly visit the children to follow up on how they are adjusting to the new school.

Our Impact

Through the cooperation with help alliance, the work of the project advanced significantly and the long-term independence of the project was promoted.

The investment in a small school bus helps the project to save costs and to earn a small income through transport fees. In addition, everyday things such as the organization of the school day, shopping for lunch or the purchase of school materials have also been significantly improved.

Through different seminars for the parents of the children in the areas of mental and physical child health, the parents were supported in learning more about the needs of their children – and foster children – and thus a holistic improvement in dealing with the children was achieved.

A positive side effect was that a parents’ initiative developed out of these seminars, which independently educates about child welfare in the village and the surrounding area and founded a small theater group.

Through the construction of a raised bed and environmental training sessions, which took place every Friday, the children’s environmental awareness was significantly improved, and active environmental protection was promoted.

A regular lunch was newly introduced. This led to a significant increase in the children’s performance and mental balance.
