Projectbackground

Many young people in the East African country find it difficult to enter the world of work, as the Kenyan education system does not provide for institutions such as vocational schools. The country’s youth unemployment rate is 17.3%, making it the highest in East Africa. Due to a lack of further education and training opportunities, they lack the necessary skills and knowledge to succeed in the job market. This makes it difficult for them to escape the cycle of unemployment and poverty.

In addition, Kenya, like many other countries, is affected by climate change. Extended periods of drought and the associated famines are becoming more frequent. Many children, especially in the poverty-stricken districts, are malnourished.

Target group

Young women, especially young mothers.

Project Target

In Mtwapa, a coastal town not far from Mombasa, an existing training center is to be expanded to include a training branch for health and beauty products. The focus of the ingredients used here is on plants native to Kenya, such as coconut or moringa, which are initially purchased from local farmers and then cultivated in the long term. Here, the participants learn about food processing and are also trained in beauty therapy. Following their training, this will give them the opportunity to become self-employed in various areas.

To this end, an existing building will first be renovated and equipped with the necessary machines and materials.

At the same time, the content of the new training course is being developed and designed. In addition to practical knowledge, the women will also learn business skills and financial management and be trained in sustainability issues.
