Together Against Menstrual Stigma in Ghana
help alliance is launching a campaign against menstrual stigma and period poverty in Ghana together with its project partner Crimson Liberation Hub (CLH), the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ), and GIZ Ghana.
The campaign brings menstrual health into the public spotlight, combining education with creative activities and civic engagement. At its heart are young women who share their personal experiences through a public theater performance. Their stories highlight how shame and taboos continue to shape the daily lives of girls and women.
To kick off the campaign, runners at the Accra International Marathon in October will carry the message of menstrual health and dignified menstruation through the streets of Accra. Activists, influencers, media partners, and community representatives are supporting the initiative, advocating for greater openness and fewer taboos. In November and December, the campaign will continue as part of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence.
The initiative builds on the ongoing project work of help alliance and Crimson Liberation Hub. The “Menstrual Empowerment” project informs girls and young women in Ghana about menstrual health, improves their access to essential resources, and empowers them to manage their menstruation with greater confidence, safety, and self-determination.
Through local expertise, international partnerships, theater, storytelling, and public engagement, the campaign aims to turn awareness into social change. Additional partners, ambassadors, and activities will be announced in the coming weeks.
