Lufthansa employees support children of Atibie, Ghana

Collecting donations by participating at the Madrid Marathon

Lufthansa employees Christopher Bingel and Stephan Droste proved once again that sport and social commitment are very important to many Lufthansa employees.

Together they came up with the idea of organising a trip to the Madrid Marathon in April 2015 under the umbrella of the non-profit organisation Global Goal e.V.

“Global Goal” is an association that was largely founded by air traffic controllers and has already twice hosted the Lufthansa World Aviation Football Cup in Frankfurt. We wanted to broaden the spectrum a bit and travelled to Madrid with about 50 Lufthansa colleagues and friends to run for the good cause,” reports Droste, former Group Policy Officer at BER CP. In total, the group raised around €4,200, most of which was raised privately. “All participants covered their own travel and accommodation costs, so that 100% of the donations collected could flow into the project. This deserves enormous respect!”

The participants competed in the distances of 10km, 21km and 42km and together they covered 1.217km. “We had a lot of fun with the organisation and a brilliant weekend, which was crowned on Sunday with the run. Many thanks to all who took part and supported us”, Droste continued.

The donations will be used to support one of our projects in Atibie, Ghana. “The help alliance offers great opportunities to make a real difference. It was important to us that the help arrives exactly where it is needed. The project in Ghana aims to make a sustainable contribution through education. We were very impressed by this,” says Christopher Bingel, Supply Chain Management Officer at LSG Sky Chefs, describing their motivation. Specifically, the aim is to support children between the ages of two and nine.

Last week, the team then paid an on-site visit, accompanied by Tim Brauer from Corporate Purchasing. “The reception was incredible, the hospitality of the Ghanaians is immense! The people responsible for the project in Atibie have put on an impressive programme. We are pleased to be able to help them with a small contribution!”. The main focus is currently on financing sanitary facilities and the purchase of a minibus, in order to be able to really look after all the children in the area.

See you next year

“We are very happy to continue to support the children in Atibie. A new event has already been fixed for this purpose: the traditional Vienna City Marathon on 10 April 2016. For next year we want to increase the number of runners to over 100”, Droste announces the finish.
