Project Background

Latin America has the second highest birth rate among women aged 15 to 19. In Colombia, although rates have declined, one in five adolescent females is pregnant or has had a child. Teen pregnancies reproduce poverty, and one of the impacts of COVID-19 is believed to be between 400,000 and 500,000 teen pregnancies due to sexual abuse
will be in Latin America. The Mother and Child Center was opened with the goal of providing medical and psychosocial support to unborn children of teenage mothers. In a new program, the facility now aims to help the young women obtain a high school diploma or complete vocational training so that they themselves and their children will be well provided for in the future.

Target Group

The target group of this project are pregnant women and teenage mothers.

Project Goals

The major goal of the project is to give teenage mothers the opportunity to continue their studies and build a life project. Since many of the mothers have to devote themselves entirely to raising their children after they are born, the Mother and Child Center offers them the opportunity to enroll in virtual studies so that they can continue learning at home. This allows them to get an education, go to work and take care of themselves. The most important goal is to prevent the mothers and their children from returning to the vicious cycle of poverty. Casa de la Madre y el Niño’s offer aims to break this cycle by enabling them to live and work in a sustainable way.
