Update from the “Kranichschule”

Corona Situation in Lebanon remains tense / The children learn how to protect themselves and others

Corona remains a topic – also in the help alliance project “Tent schools for refugees” in Lebanon. For the Syrian children who live in refugee camps and can only go to school in tents, prevention is vital because there is hardly any access to free medical treatment for refugees in Lebanon. That is why the children learn important hygiene measures at school, the school is regularly disinfected and the families are provided with additional water and soap to wash their hands frequently.

Everyday life at the "Kranichschule"

It has been almost two years since the “Kranichschule” was built and opened with the help of help alliance. A simple tent made of wood and tarpaulin offers an endless future for many children who come to class every day. The children of the “Kranich Camp” are taught in several shifts: Arabic, English, mathematics, science and music are on the curriculum and the children are enthusiastic. In addition to education and prospects for the future, the school also brings a sense of normality to their anything but normal refugee situation. In addition to the lessons, there is also a small kitchen in the “Kranich Camp” where several hundred hot meals are prepared every day and distributed to the children in the school and the refugees. Even though the meals mostly consist of simple dishes like rice and lentils, eating together is a ritual that the children look forward to every day.

However, the local commitment is not “only” an investment in education. Many of the Syrian children have to feed their families through hard field work, because adult Syrian refugees in Lebanon are banned from working. The project not only gives the children access to education, but also contributes to the fight against child labour.
