Project Background

The enthusiasm of young people in schools for computer science is only sporadic. Basic IT education plays hardly any role at school and there are only a few children who are enthusiastic about computer science. The incomplete digital school education can lead to disadvantages in terms of career opportunities for young people in a digitalised future. Moreover, young girls in particular, as well as children and young people from socio-economically disadvantaged families, often lack access, enjoyment and affinity for the IT sector. The Hacker School was founded in 2014 to counteract these challenges.

Target Group

The target group of the project are children and young people, especially from socio-economically disadvantaged families, aged 11-18 years.

Project Goals

The aim of the project is to motivate children and young people throughout Germany to become interested in programming and IT. In this way, the gap created by the lack of basic IT education in the German school system is closed. The project eliminates the prejudices regarding computer science through a playful approach and uses the curiosity and enthusiasm of the children to make them more open to digital professions. Through access to IT, young people can develop and expand their understanding of digital skills regardless of their gender and socio-economic background, strengthen their self-confidence and actively participate in shaping the digital future.

On weekends, children and young people can work on small projects with local IT specialists in the companies participating on a voluntary basis. In the so-called Hacker School sessions they can learn how computers and programs are structured and how to program their own games, websites and apps. In this way they can learn about potential professions in the IT sector in addition to developing digital skills.

In addition to the children and young people themselves, the companies also benefit from the project, on the one hand through the enthusiasm of their volunteer employees and on the other hand through the acquisition of potential future trainees and employees. In the end, the entire society benefits from the project by alleviating the lack of skilled workers in the IT sector.
