Project background

In December 2006, the General Assembly of the United Nations (UN) adopted a Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities for Equal Participation in Society. According to this, people with Down syndrome have the right to a self-determined life and equal participation in society. However, in the context of teacher training in Germany, there is still a lack of suitable training and further qualification for more inclusive education. There are also still insufficient consulting and other support services for schools, scientific institutes, associations and NGOs.

To address the above-mentioned problems, help alliance is supporting the project “Inclusion rocks for everyone” together with KIDS Hamburg e. V. (Down syndrome competence and information center). Music appeals to all people on an emotional level and opens up opportunities for social participation. The Project focuses on the special needs of people with Down syndrome and uses music to create an inclusive learning environment to improve their communication skills.

Target group

The target group of the project are children, adolescents and young adults with Down syndrome.

Based on personal experience, I have been intensively involved with inclusion – especially for people with Down syndrome – and quickly realized that Germany has a lot of catching up to do in this area.

Project goals

The aim of the project is to provide children, adolescents and young adults between the ages of 3 and 25 with access to music lessons designed to meet their specific needs and to include them in the educational environments. In various courses, the children, adolescents and young adults can listen to music without pressure to perform and also create music themselves in order to improve their ability to speak and express themselves and to strengthen their self-confidence.

The course “early musical education” is a playful approach to music. The basic skills for singing and making music with instruments are taught based on individual needs. In addition, the ability to reproduce music with the support of sign language should be developed in order to increase the receptiveness and communication skills of the participants. The other courses “Musical Theater” and “Hip-Hop Do It Yourself” aim to teach the young people specific musical styles as well as the combination of music, dance and acting. Within the scope of these musically influenced trainings, the children, adolescents and young adults will be supported in working on their musical abilities, their power of expression and their self-confidence.
