Project Background

With at least 3.8 million inhabitants, Johannesburg is the largest city in South Africa. The inequality that exists throughout the country is particularly evident here. While the metropolis conveys the image of a rich, progressive country, the reality in the large townships on the outskirts of the city is quite different. In the “townships” created during apartheid (1948-1994) there is a lack of access to education, electricity and medical care. Everyday life there is dominated by poverty, high unemployment, especially among young people, drug and alcohol abuse, and a disproportionately high crime rate. Johannesburg is also the city with the most street children in the country. These are often victims of physical and psychological violence. Not least because of the high number of AIDS patients and deaths in Johannesburg, many children grow up in precarious living situations without their parents. Without a school education, they are almost always denied a way out of the cycle of poverty.

Our Impact

The declared aim of the project is to provide the children with a stable and familiar community with a reliable daily routine and to enable them to obtain appropriate school qualifications and vocational training.

For the ideal preparation of the children for future requirements, there was comprehensive day care, homework help and an offer of additional extracurricular activities. Of course, they were also supported in all activities related to everyday life. Above all, it was important that the children and young people experience security, safety and love. This experience gives the children the necessary stability and self-confidence, which in turn promotes their integration into society.

Most recently, the safe house cared for 13 orphans, half-orphans and abandoned children and adolescents who have since grown into young adults.
In particular, the last few years of support were dedicated to strengthening the young adults’ self-confidence and helping them on their way to independence. They received support in training, job and housing searches. Many individual success stories testify to the success of this project. For example, Thembi has found an apprenticeship in her dream job as a cook, Nobuhle is successfully studying psychology and Norah now works as an account assistant.

A new home has also been found for the three girls with physical and mental disabilities, where they are lovingly looked after, cared for and supported.
