Project Background

Children with disabilities and their parents often suffer from exclusion and social stigma in Kenya. Disability is too often seen as a kind of perceived punishment for parents. Because of this stigma prevalent in society, some parents hide their children with special needs and do not provide them with educational opportunities. There are very few institutions in Kenya that provide advice and support to parents. At the Garden of Siloam project, parents can attend therapy sessions to help them provide proper care to these children with special needs and give them a fair chance in life like any other child. The rehabilitation approach is based on a holistic concept that combines medical care, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, family therapy, and social support for the families.

Our Impact

The “Garden of Siloam” was created as a place where parents and children feel welcome and supported—free from the stigma that people with disabilities often face. Children receive individually tailored therapies that address their specific needs. This rehabilitation approach is based on a holistic concept that includes medical care, physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, family counseling, and social support for the families involved.

The aim of the project was to sustainably improve the conditions for children with disabilities. For example, a new heating system was installed in the classrooms, and insulation was improved to ensure better protection against the cold during winter.
