LGBTIQ – Diversity in Museums and Neighborhoods
The project “LGBTIQ Diversity in Museums and Neighborhoods” strengthens educational opportunities on sexual and gender diversity for teenagers and young adults in Berlin. At the same time, it sustainably expands the digital and structural infrastructure of the Gay Museum, thus ensuring long-term inclusive educational work.

The project
Queer youth and adults still experience exclusion and insecurity. Many hide their identity at school, at home, or at work, and there is a lack of safe spaces, role models, and reliable information. The project creates spaces where young people can be seen, discover their history, network, and be empowered in their identity. At the same time, it promotes democratic education at a time when diversity is increasingly being called into question.
With the support of help alliance, the museum can further expand its educational work and secure it for the long term. The plan is to offer free workshops for school classes and FSJ groups and to continue holiday programs with youth centers throughout Berlin—creative formats that give young people guidance, self-confidence, and a sense of community. In addition, further training courses will be offered for teachers, students, and other multipliers, while workshops for adults will teach queer history, archival work, and empowerment.
At the same time, the museum’s digital structures are being expanded: a new website with a booking system, more secure data structures, and digital learning materials will ensure that queer knowledge and educational offerings are accessible regardless of location and origin.
Meanwhile, the museum is working to break down barriers, expand multilingual offerings, and tailor its public relations efforts to ensure that young people are reached through various channels. The peer education approach is also being expanded so that young people themselves can become mediators and contribute their perspectives.
