help alliance project in Catbalogan City needs support

Last week, two severe typhoons hit the Philippines. More than 1.4 million people were forced to leave their homes; many are still seeking shelter in evacuation centers. There were also fatalities in Catbalogan on the island of Samar, where help alliance has been supporting schools since 2022. According to the Office of Civil Defense (OCD), around 318,000 people were still in emergency shelters on Monday.

help alliance has been active in the Philippines for around four years. Last year, it launched a pilot project in collaboration with Samar State University and Cabugawa Elementary School to set up a digital training center for children and young people. Students of all grades have access to digital education there – an important foundation for building long-term career opportunities and a secure livelihood.

Next year, another building will be constructed as part of a new help alliance project that will serve a vital function: in the event of natural disasters such as earthquakes, typhoons, or floods, it will provide shelter for the population of Catbalogan as an evacuation center. In addition, the so-called “Bubble House” will open new perspectives for schoolchildren, farmers, fishermen, and other residents of Catbalogan. At the integrated recycling station, they can exchange plastic waste for food and everyday necessities – an alternative to traditional fishing. The collected plastic waste is then melted down and used, for example, to manufacture furniture. The Bubble House also serves as a learning academy for the environment, art, music, and digitalization.
