Details & Successes

Obizi, Nigeria

The long time precarious security situation made it difficult in recent years to find a permanent replacement after the former medical director had died. In 2015 Akalawu Martins started working in the hospital. As the only doctor in OPMC he had to be available for his patient 24/7. In February 2016 a young medical resident came to OPMC to assist him.

With a total of over 20 employees the OPMC is the biggest employer in this purely rural area. In addition, approximately 10 nurses are trained in the OPMC. Due to the good education they had received after successfully completing their training, they’re also able to find employment in other hospitals in Nigeria.

As there is no state health insurance in Nigeria, it often happens that the patient can not afford treatments in hospitals. However, in order to allow access to healthcare, the hospital also offers reduced prices or the possibility to settle the bill in natural products, which are then either sold on the market or used in the hospital kitchen.
