Inclusion for Children with Deafness

Sofia, Bulgarien

The project is part of help alliance since 2019.

Around 120,000 Deaf and Hard of Hearing people live in Bulgaria. Nationwide there are three special schools for Deaf and Hard of Hearing children.

Unfortunately, the special schools do not offer bilingual methods of training using both Bulgarian sign language and Bulgarian spoken language. The Bulgarian Sign Language is not used for educational purposes at the special schools at all and the majority of teachers do not know any sign language. In addition, the special schools are under the mainstream programs already and inclusive deaf education becomes vital for the Deaf community. This means that a certain number of mainstream schools in bigger cities needs to become fully inclusive of Deaf and Hard of Hearing children and youth. This way, parents will have the opportunity to choose schools where deaf and inclusive education practices will be available for their deaf and hard of hearing children.

Details & Successes

Sofia, Bulgaria

The goal of the project is to bring change and call for equal life for Deaf and Hard of hearing people in the long term in a sustainable way through innovative education and empowerment practices. For this purpose Lufthansa Technik in Sofia and the Listen Up Foundation set up a concept.

By establishing a project, which will bring up innovative and deaf-friendly classrooms and a Def Center at a university. Deaf children and youth together with parents and teachers will enjoy equality education targeted for their special needs. Their special needs will be turned into special abilities. As a result, future generations of Deaf and Hard of Hearing youth will be active participants in social life in Bulgaria.

The long-term goal of the project is also to create a model which functions as an example for other Balkan and Central European countries. There will be an effective exchange program within the community of deaf and hard of hearing people in Eastern and Central Europe. In addition, an increasing number of hearing people would like to partner with empowered Deaf young leaders. Some of the key project partners are the US-based Gallaudet University, which is the top Deaf university in the world for deaf and hard of hearing students, and the Bulgarian Ministry of Education and Science. Through our project partners a long-term operation of deaf-friendly classrooms can be guaranteed.
