War in Ukraine: How you can help

08. March 2022

The people in Ukraine now need one thing above all: fast and effective humanitarian aid

With great concern help alliance looks at the current situation in Ukraine. As the aid organization of the Lufthansa Group, we see with great dismay how this senseless war is not only destroying lives and livelihoods, but also forcing millions of people to flee.

Since the outbreak of the war, we have received daily inquiries from donors and colleagues with the wish to help the people in Ukraine through cash and in-kind donations (e.g. clothing, hygiene articles, medical equipment) or volunteer work.

Since the daily needs in the war and crisis regions change very dynamically, we advise against self-organized in-kind donations.

In order to help people in a flexible and uncomplicated manner, help alliance recommends cash donations. For this purpose, help alliance has set up its own donation page.

Your donation will be sent as emergency aid to the German Red Cross, which is currently helping the people affected in the war zones of Ukraine. You can find out what happens with your donation and for what purposes it is used on the donation page.

The Lufthansa Group’s annual donation enables us to cover the help alliance’s administrative costs. This way we can guarantee that every cent or euro you donate goes directly to our partner organization.

You can also transfer your donation to our donation account:

help alliance communities

In addition to that, there are help alliance communities at numerous LH Group locations. Like our colleagues here in Hamburg, these offer practical opportunities to get involved and support local initiatives and organizations. If you would like to find out more about the commitment of the help alliance communities, please send us an email at helpalliance@dlh.de.

What have the help alliance communities achieved so far?

The help alliance Frankfurt community was the first who organized a collection campaign for in-kind donations: At the beginning of March, a large convoy set off from Lufthansa base in the direction of Poland. A total of 13 buses and vans loaded with relief supplies such as food, first aid items and clothing were handed over to the Polish Red Cross in Wroclaw. Another relief convoy went to Krakow and last Friday one to Budapest. Each of these convoys drove with privately organized vans and volunteer drivers. The community donated and helped with loading. The exact numbers vary but in total there were well over 20 sprinters that drove, full of food, first aid and baby supplies, blankets, sleeping bags, etc. The willingness to donate is overwhelming!

Nordstern Community (help alliance Hamburg) offers a wide range of opportunities for colleagues who would like to get involved for the people from Ukraine. In the first week after the outbreak of the war, more than 80 colleagues volunteered at Hanseatic Help e.V. and sorted in-kind donations to ensure smooth deliveries to the crisis areas. End of April, a large, needs-oriented collection of in-kind donations will take place at Lufthansa Technik base in Hamburg.

Our help alliance Community Sofia closely collaborates the Bulgarian Red Cross and organises various activities together with Lufthansa Technik Sofia. And our help alliance Community in Gdansk, Poland, supports numerous crisis interventions such as donation campaigns or psychological counselling for employees affected by the war in the Ukraine. There are additional activities going on in our help alliance Communities in Munich, Zurich or Milano.

We are very proud of what our colleagues have already achieved in such a short time and say thank you!
